About the place

This was the Hangu hermitage, linked to the hermit Silvestru. In 1639 the hetman Gheorghe, brother of Prince Vasile Lupu, built the stone church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, and the enclosure wall is dated 1676. The Ruset and Cantacuzino families built a fortified boyar manor around it, with round towers, walls and cellars. The Cantacuzinos received the title of knyaz (prince) in Russia, hence the name Palatul Cnejilor, the Princes' Palace.

In the mid-19th century the Cantacuzinos lost the estate, which passed to the Sturdza family. The church has been restored, but the manor with its towers, walls and cellars is now in ruins. The ensemble is a listed historic monument.
