It is the easiest hike from Durău to a spectacular spot, and it can be done in winter too, when the snow allows.
About the place
The water drops about 25 m in two steps separated by a ledge cut into the rock. The waterfall is a natural monument, and its name comes from the roar of the water. In spring, when the snow melts, the flow is strongest. Next to the falls there is a rest area with tables and benches.
Two paths start in Durău, both in front of the park administration office. The blue-cross path over Piciorul lui Bucur is 4.1 km long with about 500 m of ascent and takes 1.5–2 hours; the Munții Noștri trail atlas lists it as usable all year, depending on the snow. The red-cross path goes through Poiana Viezuri, among large blocks of conglomerate fallen from Toaca and Piatra Ciobanului, and continues past the waterfall up to Cabana Dochia.
Good to know
- In winter take the blue-cross path, in boots with light crampons; the section above the waterfall towards Dochia has wooden steps and is not recommended in winter.
- The park charges a visitor fee and only allows walking on marked paths; ask at the park administration office, where the trails start.
- You can go up one path and come down the other to make a loop.
