A guide to the county
Neamț
in five.
A short guide to Neamț County: in every town, five places to explore, five to eat and five to stay. Chosen by people, not algorithms.
Towns
We started with the towns where we found good places in all three categories. More will follow as we check them.
Piatra NeamțThe county seat, ringed by the Cozla, Pietricica and Cernegura mountains, with Stephen the Great's princely court, the Cucuteni museum and the gondola up Mount Cozla.
BicazThe town below the dam on the Bistrița, with Lake Izvorul Muntelui and the southern way up Ceahlău.
Agapia și VăratecThe commune of Neamț's two large convents, Agapia and Văratec, with the church painted by Nicolae Grigorescu and the nuns' villages at the edge of the forest.
Târgu NeamțThe town below Neamț Citadel, with Ion Creangă’s Humulești, a short drive from Neamț Monastery and the bison of Vânători.
RomanThe old market town where the Moldova meets the Siret, with a cathedral built under Petru Rareș and museums in old townhouses in the centre.
DurăuThe resort at the foot of Mount Ceahlău, at about 800 m, with a monastery painted by Tonitza and his students, a small ski slope and the paths to the Duruitoarea waterfall and Toaca Peak.Photo: Piatra Neamț: Radueduard / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0 · Bicaz: Bekuletz / Wikimedia Commons, domeniu public · Agapia și Văratec: Curcan ionel / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 · Târgu Neamț: FabianPopovici / Wikimedia Commons, domeniu public · Roman: Cezar Suceveanu / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 · Durău: Sinziana / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0

Why only five?
- Five helps you choose.A list of 40 restaurants leaves the searching to you. Five means we already chose.
- Every place has a reason. Each entry says in one line why it made the list.
- Different places, not clones. We pick places that are not alike, so everyone finds what suits them.
- The list changes, it doesn't grow. When a place comes in, another goes out. We review the selection regularly.
