You can see European bison, Europe’s largest land animals, up close, just 2.5 km from Neamț Monastery.
About the place
The reserve was set up in 1968, when the first bison were brought from Poland, according to the Ținutul Zimbrului association. It covers almost 12 ha, with three ponds and enclosures holding bison, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar and birds. It is part of Vânători-Neamț Natural Park, run by Romsilva, the state forest agency.
Bison also roam free in the park’s forests. The park administration runs ranger-led “Bison Safari” walks, which start at the visitor centre in Vânători-Neamț village and go on foot into an acclimatisation enclosure of about 180 ha. Since March 2026 the visitor centre has a new exhibition with two life-size bison and virtual-reality stations.
