It links two foundations, Lady Ruxandra's and Bishop Ioanichie's, and is a listed ensemble a few steps from the central hotels.
About the place
In 1569 Lady Ruxandra, widow of Prince Alexandru Lăpușneanu, built a new church here for the townspeople, replacing the one in the cemetery. Work lasted from May to September, and the church was dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. The founding inscription and the altar table survive from it.
Between 1753 and 1764 Bishop Ioanichie of Roman rebuilt the church and founded a monastery here, supported by Prince Constantin Racoviță, who gave it church plate, icons and estates. An infirmary opened next to the monastery at the time, the forerunner of the Precista hospital next door. The ensemble, with the church and the 1753 bell tower, is a listed monument.
